Crater Lake in 1911 had been a national park for roughly nine years, and most visitors still reached the rim by horse-drawn stage over long, dusty roads from Medford and Klamath Falls. Motor cars were just beginning to share those roads, a change that would reshape how people got to the rim within a few seasons. Oregon was growing quickly that decade, with new settlers filling irrigated valleys and timber companies working the Cascade slopes, yet the lake remained a destination for travelers willing to spend days on the road. Park administrators were still deciding how much lodging and road building the rim could bear without losing the quiet that drew people up the mountain in the first place.
