Crater Lake in 1909 filled a collapsed volcanic crater that had gathered rain and snowmelt for thousands of years, and at nearly 1,950 feet deep it was already known as the deepest lake in the United States. The Klamath people, whose reservation lay to the east, had told stories about the mountain's destruction for generations, including the Llao and Skell legend tied to the cinder cone that rises from the water as Wizard Island. Heavy snow shut the rim roads for much of the year, so summer was the only season when visitors and park staff could work there in any numbers. Across Oregon that year, the economy ran on timber mills, railroads, and valley farms, and the lake stood apart from all of it as a scenic destination rather than a source of wages.
