Klamath Falls, Oregon, in 1909 was a young railroad town in the south-central part of the state, having taken its present name in 1893 after its earlier name, Linkville. The Southern Pacific Railroad was pushing its line into the area that year, and the promise of rail service drew merchants, lumbermen, and land seekers. Federal irrigation work under the Reclamation Service's Klamath Project, begun in 1905, was draining marshland and opening farm plots on the surrounding lake basins, so the town's economy rested on timber, freight, and the hope of agriculture. Residents of the period knew the place as a gateway to the Klamath country, where a new depot, sawmills, and boardinghouses signaled that the frontier was giving way to a settled community.
