Laidland, Oregon, in 1910 was a small rural settlement whose fortunes rose and fell with the farms around it. Across the state that decade, wheat, fruit, lumber, and livestock drove the economy, and the railroads that reached into the interior carried the crops to market and brought in settlers. Oregon's population had grown quickly since the turn of the century, and many newcomers arrived looking for land they could farm or sell to other homesteaders. Life in places like Laidland centered on the church, the school, the grange hall, and the store where neighbors traded news as well as goods. The panoramic view records a community that depended on a single rail line and a few good seasons, and that its residents would have known as home.
