Lake Lytle, in Tillamook County on Oregon's North Coast, was photographed in 1912, a year when the county's economy rested on dairying, logging, and fishing. Dairy farms supplied milk to the county's cheese and butter makers, and the Tillamook County Creamery Association, formed in 1909, was building a regional reputation for cheese. Rail service had only recently reached Tillamook, and the new line helped move dairy products, lumber, and passengers out of a county still reached mostly by water and rough roads. Residents of the time knew the area for its wet, green pastures, its dense coastal forests, and the cheese factories that anchored many small communities.
