Ontario, Oregon, in 1912 sat on the south bank of the Snake River, directly across from Idaho, and its residents were weighing a question that had reached every corner of the state. That November, Oregon voters approved women's suffrage. Irrigation was reshaping the valley around the town, as canals carried river water onto land that had been sagebrush a generation earlier, and each new ditch drew more homesteaders and more business to the streets. Ranchers and merchants measured their year by water allotments and by what their crops brought in distant markets. People who walked these streets in 1912 would have known Ontario as a place still making its name, not yet settled into its final shape.
