Seaside, on the north Oregon coast in Clatsop County, is the setting for this 1912 view with Tillamook Head rising to the south. By then the town had been a summer destination for more than thirty years, drawing visitors from Portland and the Willamette Valley who came by train and steamer to stay in beachfront hotels and cottages. The surrounding Clatsop Plains supported dairy farms, while the timber on the coastal hills fed sawmills and the lumber trade that shaped the wider county. Lewis and Clark's expedition had camped nearby in 1806 to boil seawater for salt, a link to the town's past that residents still pointed out to visitors. Seaside's sense of itself in 1912 rested on that mix of seaside leisure and working coastal country.
