Seaside, Oregon, in 1914 was a summer resort on the state's north coast, where Portland families rode the rail line west to spend warm months by the surf. The town had grown up around the Seaside House, the oceanfront hotel that Ben Holladay built in the 1870s, and its visitors came for bathing, boardwalk strolls, and long views north toward Tillamook Head. Clatsop County's economy still leaned on timber, dairying, and fishing, so the resort sat alongside working landscapes of logging camps and salmon canneries. That same summer, Europe slid into war, but on this coast the news traveled slowly, and the season's routines of hotel dinners, band concerts, and sea air went on much as before.
