In 1914 Astoria and Warrenton sat on opposite shores of the Columbia River near its mouth, and their economies rested on the river itself. Salmon canneries, sawmills, and shipping drew workers from across the Pacific Northwest and from Scandinavian and other immigrant communities, and the river's shifting bar made the crossing to the open ocean a constant concern for captains and pilots. Warrenton's timber and mill work tied it closely to Astoria's port, and the two towns depended on steamers and ferries to move people and goods between them. Residents of the period knew the lower Columbia as a working waterfront, where the rhythms of the fishing season, the sawmill whistles, and the arrival of ships set the pace of daily life.
