Astoria, Flavel and Warrenton sat along the lower Columbia River and Oregon's northern coast in 1914, when the local economy rested on salmon, timber and shipping. Astoria, founded in 1811 as a fur-trading post, was lined with salmon canneries and sawmills, and its waterfront served vessels crossing the dangerous Columbia bar to and from the Pacific. Flavel, a small riverside community near Astoria, took its name from Captain George Flavel, a bar pilot whose house still stands in Astoria. Warrenton, to the south near Youngs Bay, drew workers to lumber and fishing operations, and that same year the Panama Canal opened, promising new shipping routes for ports like these.
