In 1914, Flavel, Warrenton and Astoria stood at the mouth of the Columbia River, where fishing, canning and timber shaped daily life. Astoria, the largest of the three, grew out of its fur-trading origins into a port with salmon canneries and sawmills along the waterfront, and ships bound for the Pacific and overseas called there to load lumber and fish. Warrenton, a smaller town to the south near Youngs Bay, depended on the same water for work and trade. Flavel, named for the sea captain George Flavel, was a small riverfront community tied to the steady traffic on the river. Residents knew the district as a working port whose livelihood rose and fell with the tides, the river bar and the weather.
