In 1914, Gearhart was a young seaside resort on the Clatsop Plains of northwestern Oregon, a few miles south of Seaside and within easy reach of Astoria, the port at the mouth of the Columbia River. Its economy leaned on summer visitors, land sales, and the salmon canneries, lumber mills, and shipping that made Astoria the region's commercial center. This review of troops suggests the sands and open fields near the beach were being used for military drills, a common sight on the Oregon coast when the state's National Guard held its summer encampments. Europe's war had just begun that summer, though the United States had not yet joined it, so the parade ground would have been a place of local pride and public attention rather than wartime anxiety. Residents and visitors who gathered to watch would have known the town mainly as a quiet place to spend the warm months by the ocean.
