In 1914, Gearhart was a small summer resort on the Clatsop Plains of the northern Oregon coast, a short distance south of Seaside and reached by rail and road from Astoria. Its visitors came for the beach, the surf, and the hotel and cottage life, while the surrounding plains supported dairy farms and the lumber and fishing trades of the lower Columbia kept nearby Astoria busy. This panoramic view shows a tent camp of soldiers spread across open ground, a reminder that the state's militia used coastal sites for summer training in those years. That same summer, war broke out in Europe, and talk of national preparedness began drawing attention to drills like these, though the United States would not enter the fighting until 1917.
