Astoria, at the mouth of the Columbia River in Clatsop County, marked the centennial of Fort Astoria's founding in 1811 with a celebration in 1911. The town's economy rested on salmon canning, lumber milling, and shipping, with canneries and sawmills lining the waterfront and vessels crossing the Columbia bar to reach open ocean. Residents regarded Astoria as the first permanent American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains, and that claim gave the anniversary real civic weight. The caption's mention of the Nez Perce and Yakima suggests that peoples from the interior Columbia Plateau took part in the commemoration, a reminder that the fur trade had first drawn outside powers and settlers into this country.
