Lakeview, the seat of Lake County in south-central Oregon, was a high desert ranching town in 1911, built on cattle, sheep, and the hay and wool shipped out of the surrounding valleys. Rail service into the county was still limited, so freight wagons and stagecoaches carried much of the trade to distant markets. Residents measured their seasons by snowfall, irrigation water, and the spring and fall drives of livestock. Because the county's population was small and spread across large ranches, church gatherings, fairs, and courthouse business drew families in from long distances. Lakeview was a young community that year, and its people knew it mainly as the center of a sparsely settled stock country.
