Castle Garden, the circular sandstone fort at the tip of Manhattan, is the building that stands in this view, and it is shown with Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's statue in the background, which places the scene in the years before the statue was erected on Liberty Island. Built as a harbor fort in the early 1800s, the structure later served as a concert hall and then as the country's first federal immigration station, where millions of arrivals were processed before Ellis Island opened in 1892. The juxtaposition is worth noticing: the gateway that greeted newcomers sits beside the monument that would come to symbolize that same welcome.
