This view shows the Municipal Auditorium and Memorial Plaza in St. Louis, a civic complex that was still largely a plan in 1928. The city had long pursued a civic center on the west side of downtown, following the City Beautiful ideas that shaped many American cities in the early 1900s. The auditorium was completed in the early 1930s, and the memorial plaza was meant to honor local veterans, so the picture records an ambitious project at the moment its design was taking shape.
