Phelps Hall, one of the buildings along the east front of Yale University, anchors this view of the New Haven campus. The scene comes from a large 8-by-10-inch glass plate negative made between 1900 and 1915 by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American towns, rail routes and landmarks in those years. Yale, founded in 1701, was by then a major institution in the city, and its Gothic and collegiate architecture gave New Haven much of its distinctive look. The careful framing of the east elevation shows how the campus presented itself to visitors at the start of the twentieth century.
