Few buildings in New Haven were as central to the city's commercial life as the Tontine Coffee House. It was financed through a tontine, a subscription scheme in which shares passed to the surviving subscribers, and it served merchants, shippers and travelers as a place to trade news and conduct business. The caption card gives no date for this engraving, but its bracketed 19th-century attribution places it in a period when the coffee house was a familiar landmark of downtown New Haven.
