The Tontine Hotel took its name from the financing scheme behind it, a tontine in which subscribers shared the income until the last surviving investor claimed the whole. Built in New Haven's downtown in the late eighteenth century, the hotel was a fixture for travelers and local society for generations. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative was made between 1900 and 1915 by the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American towns, streets, and landmarks for sale as postcards and photochrom prints. Notes on the negative, including the Detroit company number, record its later gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
