Trinity Episcopal Church stands on the New Haven Green, the central open space that the town's first settlers laid out in 1638, and this view places its tall spire among the trees and lawns of the common. The church, a Gothic Revival brownstone building completed in the 1810s, was already a downtown landmark long before this picture was made. The photograph comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled the country between about 1900 and 1915 recording towns and scenery for commercial sale. Its large 8 by 10 inch glass negative captures the scene in fine detail, which makes it useful for studying the streetscape of the period.
