The Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University, founded in 1866 with support from the philanthropist George Peabody, is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, which dates from roughly 1900 to 1915. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its large-format views of American towns, landscapes and institutions, made the picture, and its numbered negatives were often sold to publishers and collectors. Its survival is also a matter of record: the State Historical Society of Colorado gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1949.
