Most views of Yale's campus show its older Gothic halls, but this print is titled for Sterling Memorial Library, the university's main research library in New Haven, Connecticut. The catalog dates it to about 1921, several years before the building was dedicated in 1930, so the print may show the site or an early stage of the project. The photograph was issued by the Simonds Company of New Haven and registered for copyright, a common practice for local commercial studio views of the period. Its record mainly serves as a window onto how the city and university presented their architecture in the 1920s.
