The gateway at Grove Street Cemetery is the focus here, marking the entrance to one of the oldest garden-style cemeteries in the United States. Founded in 1797, Grove Street was laid out with winding paths and landscaped grounds, a departure from the crowded churchyards of the period, and it helped set a model for later rural cemeteries. Eli Whitney and Noah Webster are among those buried there, which has long drawn visitors to the site. The photograph is dated around 1940, so it captures the cemetery well over a century after its founding.
