Oxen pulling a line of canvas-topped wagons across open grassland give this engraving its particular character, with the slow, heavy teams standing in for the whole overland journey. Felix O.C. Darley, one of the leading American illustrators of the mid-nineteenth century, designed the scene, and H.B. Hall Jr. cut the engraving that Appleton published around 1869. Between the 1840s and the 1860s, families traveling the Oregon, California and Mormon trails often spent months on the road, and the ox-drawn wagon was the workhorse of that migration. The print is worth noticing for how it presents the westward movement as a shared, patient labor.
