This engraving shows a caravan of emigrants crossing what its title calls the "great American desert" in Nebraska, a stretch of the central plains that 19th-century maps often labeled as unfit for farming. Nebraska lay along the central route of the overland trails, which carried gold-seekers and settlers toward California and Oregon, mostly following the Platte River valley. Hand-coloring was added to many wood engravings of this kind, so the wagons and clothing may show color the printmaker chose rather than the original look of the scene. The date range in the record is uncertain, but the subject reflects the peak years of westward migration.
