Cupid in Chaps" is a color lithograph poster for a Selig western comedy, and its title puts a playful spin on a cowboy love story. Selig Polyscope, one of the earliest American film studios, was founded in Chicago, and its western pictures helped make the cowboy a staple of silent-era entertainment. The poster was printed in Chicago by the Goes Lithographing Company, a firm that produced much of the large, bright advertising theaters used to draw crowds. Its courtship and romance themes reflect the comic love-story formula that filled early movie programs.
