Pawnee Bill, the stage name of Gordon W. Lillie (1860-1942), headlined this poster, which boasts that his show was "the only genuine wild west" and promises a tour across America. Lillie had spent time among the Pawnee in Indian Territory and Oklahoma, and he built his troupe around that connection, which he used to set his show apart from the larger Buffalo Bill's Wild West. The bison listed among the subjects were a common draw for these shows, which billed live animals and mounted performers as proof of authenticity. The lithograph reflects the bold color and crowded layout typical of circus and show posters from the early 1900s, when such placards were printed in large runs to fill towns along a touring route.
