Few posters of the period present their subject as a contest of peoples, and this one's title, "Wild rivalries of savage, barbarous and civilized races," makes that framing explicit. Buffalo Bill's Wild West, led by William F. Cody, toured under the "Congress of Rough Riders of the World" name in the 1890s, bringing together horsemen and performers from several countries and from the American frontier. The poster was printed by the Courier Litho. Co. of Buffalo, New York, a firm known for circus and show bills of this era. Its language reflects the racial ideas common in popular entertainment at the time, which makes it useful for seeing how the show marketed its spectacle.
