The title names Col. W.F. Cody, the frontier scout and showman known as Buffalo Bill, and the genre is portrait, so this color poster centers on a single figure rather than a crowd of riders and performers, as many Wild West bills did. The sheet was printed in London by Weiners, Ltd., and credits Alick P.F. Ritchie for the design. Cody's show had drawn large crowds in Britain since its 1887 London season, and posters like this one carried the American frontier to audiences who would never see the plains. The bracketed date of about 1890 places it during one of the show's return engagements.
