Titled "The New Home" in the Far West, this color lithograph carries a phrase that was common in promotional prints of the early 1880s, when westward settlement was booming. The Homestead Act of 1862 had opened public land to families willing to farm it, and railroad companies and land agents often used images like this to present the frontier as orderly and full of promise. The print was issued by W.U. Morgan & Co., a lithography firm, and its date, around 1881, places it in the years when many families were making the trip west. Its value today lies in showing how settlement was pictured to people who were deciding whether to go.
