Mountain Meadows, the valley in southwestern Utah named in this print's title, is best known as the site of the September 1857 massacre of an emigrant party bound for California, in which roughly 120 men, women, and children were killed. The record links the picture to that event, though its title presents the place as landscape rather than as a scene of violence. The lithograph was drawn by S.H. Redmond, transferred to stone by H. Steinegger, and printed by Britton, Rey & Co. for the Pacific Art Co. of San Francisco around 1877. That was the year John D. Lee, the only man convicted for his role in the killings, was executed, so the print appeared while the massacre was still widely discussed in the West.
