A bad hoss" takes its title from the cowboy speech of the open range, where a horse that refused to be ridden was a daily trial for the men who worked with it. Charles M. Russell painted the original in 1904, and this color lithograph, made around 1905, carried the composition to a wider audience. Russell worked in Montana and spent years among working cowboys and their horses, and his scenes of bucking broncs drew on what he had seen firsthand. The reproduction was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which is why a copy of the work survives in the Library's collections.
