Kit Carson, the hunter and trapper, is the subject of this color print, which ran under the "Historic Milestones" heading in *The Youth's Companion*, a Boston weekly aimed at young readers. Carson (1809–1868) spent his early career trapping in the Rocky Mountains and later guided explorers such as John C. Frémont across the West, becoming one of the best-known frontiersmen of his day. The print dates from about 1922 and carries a copyright held by the Perry Mason Company, the magazine's publisher. It shows how the frontier hero was packaged for a young audience more than half a century after Carson's death.
