A bear being roped by Native Californians is an unusual subject among the frontier scenes of the 1870s, and it sets this print apart from the broader run of Western pictures. The drawing is credited to Felix O.C. Darley, a New York illustrator known for his scenes of American life, and the plate was engraved by Francis Holl, a London engraver who worked on many American book illustrations. D. Appleton & Co. of New York published it around 1873 as a color lithograph. Prints like this helped eastern audiences form their picture of California and its Native peoples, often in terms of dramatic action rather than daily life.
