Railroad land-sale posters like this one were a key tool for filling the plains after the Civil War. The Burlington & Missouri River Railroad, chartered in Iowa, owned large grants of land along its line through eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, and it sold that acreage to settlers on credit, promising good farms within reach of its tracks. Posters such as this one, printed to catch the eye of families in the East and in Europe, pitched rich soil, easy terms and the promise of a new town on the prairie. Look closely at the wording to see how the railroad sold the land as much as the place itself.
