Rather than a landscape, this sheet shows a French horse race over fences, a sight that would have looked strange to Japanese viewers, alongside an orchid said to come from Borneo and a South American island. The title, roughly "Collection of reported international treasures," points to the foreign curiosities and news that reached Japan in the mid-1800s, when information about the outside world came mostly through Dutch and Chinese sources. The record credits Utagawa Hiroshige and dates the sheet to 1850, a period when the Utagawa studio produced many single sheets on distant lands. The printed captions are what make its subjects clear today.
