This 1904 view shows the Polo Grounds, the ballpark in upper Manhattan where the New York Giants played for decades, with a Cincinnati team on the field. The Polo Grounds sat on Coogan's Bluff near Harlem, and its name came from earlier use of the grounds for polo matches. In 1904 the Giants' manager, John McGraw, declined to play the American League champion Boston club in that year's championship series, a decision that made the season's baseball politics as much a story as the games themselves.
