The Polo Grounds is the subject here, pictured in 1905, the year the New York Giants beat the Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series. The park stood on Coogan's Bluff in Upper Manhattan, and its wooden grandstands and open outfield made it one of the best-known ballparks of the early twentieth century. Christy Mathewson pitched three shutouts in that Series, a performance that helped make the Giants' home grounds a center of the city's sporting life. The record also lists Pittsburgh, a detail worth checking against the original caption when studying the view.
