Richard E. Byrd painted this Christmas carol in gouache on white watercolor stock in December 1934, while his second Antarctic expedition was wintering at its base on the Ross Ice Shelf. Its playful message asks friends to tell Santa Claus that if he visits the South Pole, Byrd will gladly name a glacier or mountain range after him, as he had already done for several other Santa Clauses. Byrd, the naval officer who had flown over the South Pole in 1929, used such festive exchanges to keep his far-off camp connected to friends and family at home.
