Children singing carols on a stereo card give this view a direct look at how the holiday was celebrated in the 1890s. Stereographs were printed as pairs of nearly identical photographs that, seen through a hand viewer, merged into a single image with depth, and they were a popular parlor entertainment in American homes of the period. The Baltimore firm of Underwood & Underwood produced large numbers of these cards, many showing everyday scenes, and the caroling tradition shown here was enjoying renewed popularity in Victorian households and communities.
