Here a familiar Christmas carol becomes a vehicle for politics, with the phrase "Peace on earth, good will" applied to relations between nations rather than neighbors. Published around 1928, the engraving reflects the decade's hopes after the First World War, when many Americans and Europeans looked to diplomacy to prevent another large conflict. That year's Kellogg-Briand Pact, in which signatories renounced war as an instrument of national policy, shows how seriously such sentiments were taken. The cartoonist borrows a holiday custom of caroling to make a serious point about international goodwill.
