Rather than a manger or a snowy village, this wood engraving pairs the angelic greeting from Luke 2:14 with the subjects of war and peace, which gives the familiar words a sharper edge. Fritz Eichenberg, a German-born artist who settled in the United States in 1933, became known for finely cut black-and-white engravings that often carried pacifist and social concerns. Issued as a Christmas card in 1954, only a year after the Korean War armistice, it reflects how the postwar years kept the hope for peace at the center of the season. The card is signed on the block and inside, so the artist's hand appears in both the printed image and its greeting.
