Christmas night, 1776, is the moment this image freezes: George Washington's army crossing the icy Delaware River to strike the Hessian garrison at Trenton, New Jersey, the next morning. The picture reproduces Emanuel Leutze's 1851 painting, which Leutze made in Düsseldorf, Germany, and which became one of the most recognized images of the Revolution. This c1931 photomechanical reproduction, registered for copyright by Donn P. Crane, shows how the painting's bold composition was widely reprinted and circulated in American homes, schools and public buildings in the early twentieth century.
