Angels ringing bells above a Christmas scene give this print its subject. It reproduces a painting by Edwin Blashfield, the American muralist, and was issued as number 1020 in the Perry Pictures series, a Boston enterprise that sold inexpensive copies of well-known paintings, many of them meant for schoolrooms and family homes. The halftone process, which broke an image into a fine pattern of dots that a press could print in quantity, made such affordable reproductions practical around 1910. The chimes are the picture's central idea, a festive sound that carried the holiday's message into ordinary households.
