A holiday egg-nog party is the subject of this wood engraving, which Harper's Weekly published on a supplement page at the close of 1870. The drawing by illustrator W.L. Sheppard presents Christmas in the South during the years after the Civil War, when the magazine often sent readers scenes of Southern life. Egg-nog, a rich blend of eggs, cream, sugar and spirits, was a longstanding Christmas custom in many Southern homes, and the record notes that both children and adults appear in the scene. The picture offers a glimpse of domestic holiday celebration as Northern readers were encountering it in print.
