Thure de Thulstrup, the Swedish-born illustrator who worked for Harper's Weekly for many years, drew this wood engraving for the magazine's Christmas number of December 25, 1880. Its focus is the labor behind holiday decoration: men and women gathering evergreen boughs and shaping them into wreaths, a practice tied closely to the season's domestic rituals in American homes. Wood engravings like this one were the main way readers of the period saw such scenes, since photographs could not yet be reproduced cheaply on the printed page. The picture offers a useful record of how Christmas greenery was prepared in 1880.
