Holly and evergreen boughs fill the foreground of this wood engraving of a street scene in Richmond, Virginia, where a Black vendor sells Christmas greens to passersby. William Ludwell Sheppard, a Richmond-born illustrator who contributed to *Harper's Weekly*, drew the scene for the magazine's Christmas 1875 issue, when the paper often featured holiday subjects. The picture belongs to the years after the Civil War, when Black workers in Southern cities ran many small trades in the streets. Its ordinary market setting makes it a useful glimpse of holiday commerce in a Reconstruction-era city.
