Radio is the thread running through this portrait, which shows officials posed around a microphone in Washington, D.C., under the title "Health as a Christmas gift to America." The record names Hugh S. Cumming, who led the U.S. Public Health Service as Surgeon General through much of the 1920s and into the mid-1930s, along with Joseph W. Schereschewsky, Allan J. McLaughlin and Richard H. Creel. Radio was still a young medium then, and federal agencies were beginning to use broadcasts to bring health advice directly into American homes. The picture is a useful record of how government officials presented public health to a national audience in the years between the wars.
