Printed as a Christmas greeting for members of the Foreign Missionary Box Association of the Protestant Episcopal Church, this 1877 wood engraving links a holiday card to the church's overseas work. Its subjects, mission churches and missionary activity in Liberia, reflect the Episcopal Church's interest in West Africa during the 1870s, when American congregations sent money and supplies to distant missions through church societies. Missionary boxes, collections of donations and goods shipped abroad, were a common way for parishioners to take part in that effort. Wood engraving was then the standard method for reproducing illustrations in inexpensive printed matter, which made cards like this one widely available as seasonal gifts.
